Skelwith Fold Caravan Park News

Touring Layout Changes, January 2009

We are making a few adjustments to how certain touring areas are used. We have moved the seasonal tourers to the Blake Beck area in order to enable us to upgrade the Tarn area to Premium Pitches complete with electric, water, drains and TV hook-up. We are extending some of the other touring pitches to accomodate the growing trend for longer caravans. We will also be refurbishing the Tarn Toilet Block over Winter, in line with the Garden Toilet Block refurbishment two years ago.
If you are intrested in staying on a Premium pitch at Skelwith Fold you'll be pleased to hear we're hoping to have them up and running by Easter. We will announce pricing as soon as they are ready.

Slew Tarn Comes Back To Life, December 2009

Following on from the work taking place at the end of the season to reinvigorate the sad looking Slew Tarn we're pleased to see the big muddy hole is full of water once more and looking like, well, Slew Tarn again. Judge for yourselves how much happier it looks next time you're at the park. It will take quite a while for the lillies to return in their former glory but we're looking forward to watching the tarn settle down over the next year or so. Over the next 12 months we will be making the paths around the tarn and even a new bridge over the outfall weir.

Flooded Cumbria, November 2009

We received many concerned phone calls about how we were coping with the floods. The park was almost completely cut-off from the outside world due to serious flooding at Ambleside and at Newby Bridge. However, the flooding only lasted a few days and the Park itself suffered no real flooding, just a large volume of water rushing through. We were certainly much more fortunate than those unlucky enough to be in North Cumbria.

Slew Tarn, 100 Years On, October 2009

Slew Tarn was one of three tarns originally at Skelwith, this one being a man made feature created by damming up of a water course in the south west corner.

Over the years it has provided much pleasure and is even featured in the film Swallows and Amazons. In the last ten years Natural Succession has really taken hold as the margins have moved in at an alarming rate and sediment increased and the area of water reduced dramatically.

It has been the subject of many studies by interested and learned people, from the Institute of Freshwater Ecology, Professor David Bellamy and many a graduate from Lancaster University. In spite of high hopes nothing of spectacular botanical or ecological interest has ever been found. And as a result our advisors have all come to the conclusion that to dredge it would be the best for everyone and for the long term future of this wonderful feature.

Work has begun, the diggers have now been in for two weeks and the area has begun its metamorphosis. It will take time for the surroundings to recover and for new species to colonise but in twelve months or so we should end up with a really spectacular feature.

Library, September 2009

The trust library is seeing masses of use and thanks to all the kind contributions has a cracking selection of reading material. Unfortunately due to the library being unmanned we aren’t able to leave any of the DVD’s or videos contributed on the shelves because of the age rating system. If you would like to reclaim any of the DVD’s or videos that you have contributed please ask at reception. Otherwise we will donate them to charity shops as we have been doing with any duplicate books donated.

If anyone wants to contribute any fresh books at the start of next season huge thanks will be waiting. An extra special thanks must go out to the “Secret Librarian” who has spent many hours keeping, sorting and tidying the library all “for the love of books”. We are eternally in his or her debt.

Jack The New Lad, August 2009

Jack Webb is both the newest and youngest member of the Skelwith Fold team. At just 16 he joins us to begin the first ever Government backed caravan industry apprenticeship. Over the next 3 years he will complete a program of work based training and some practical studies at Myerscough College. Photo provided for your Jack spotting needs.

Great North Air Ambulance, July 2009

A big thank you to those of you who over the past few months have helped us raise a healthy sum of £528.15 for the Great North Air Ambulance. Much of the sum was raised by the purchase of Mr Carroll’s series of walks available at reception as well as donations received at this years summer show and the purchase of the Skelwith Quiz (see overleaf). The Great North Air Ambulance were incredibly impressed by the amount donated and we hope to be able to repeat the gesture again and again.

Skelwith Quiz, July 2009

Many thanks to all those who donated some spare change to the air ambulance in exchange for a go at our Skelwith quiz-sheet. Several entries had the same highest score so the winner had to be picked from a hat. Following the name draw congratulations go to Pam Vinnicombe as the lucky winner.

There was one question that provoked much discussion: Why is Piggy’s Hill called Piggy’s hill. Truth be told, we don’t know ourselves. We were hoping someone could tell us. Most entrants had left a blank for this question but a few people did have an imaginative go at coming up with an answer. Pam’s was particularly charming so for your enjoyment here is her answer, in full, below.

Question 10: Why is Piggy’s Hill called Piggy’s Hill?

This is a little known fact, known only to those closest to Beatrix Potter. It was given to me by an ancestor who lived close to Beatrix. Beatrix used to visit Skelwith Fold and it was here that she got many ideas for her books, due no doubt to the abundance of wildlife that inspired her. Of course in those days there were no caravans!

One day Beatrix was sitting near what is now the children’s play area, idly drawing and dreaming the morning away, she was startled by a grunting noise and to her surprise a group of piglets appeared over the hill. “Where did you come from?” she asked them. The largest piglet told her that they lived at a nearby farm, but they loved to visit Skelwith. Once over the hill they could find the plumpest acorns to eat and met the nicest people.

Beatrix was enchanted and used the piglets and their adventures as models for her books and so the name ‘Piggy’s Hill’ was given to the area!!!!

Pam Vinnicombe.

Flickr Photo Galleries, June 2009

Skelwith Fold has a great many budding photographers amongst it’s visitors and caravan owners, some keen amateurs through to enthusiasts and ex-professionals. You will have seen evidence of this at any one of our annual summer shows but we felt a permanent home was deserved for the displaying of everybodys photographic efforts. We have therefore put together a Skelwith Fold Caravan Park group on Flickr.com, a popular internet photo gallery.

The group is in its infancy at the moment with just a handful of photographs from a few contributors but we look forward to the gallery swelling in size. To see the gallery you need to visit www.flickr.com/groups then search for skelwith fold caravan park.

If you would like to contribute any pictures to the group you need to create a free account with Flickr, instructions for which are on the website.

We all look forward to seeing what you have been snapping on your trips to and around Skelwith Fold. Watch this space as there we will soon be launching a microsite for uploading your videos too.

Summer Show, Now and Next..., June 2009

Any of you who attended the summer show will already know how fantastic all the entries were again this year, from cakes to photos every exhibit was a treat. We’ve already   began discussing next years show and figuring out what needs to be done, but as always with the summer show, the hard work was mostly done by helpful volunteers. A huge amount of gratitude goes out to those who drove the show this year (you know who you are) and finally a big well done to “best in show” winner, John Slingsby, for his extravagant bird-house (perhaps bird-cottage is more appropriate). We’re already looking forward to 2010, we hope you are too.

Arts & Crafts Summer Show 2009

Everyone is welcome again at our Arts & Crafts Summer Show this Spring Bank Holiday weekend where we will be showcasing all of the spectacular offerings from you, friends of Skelwith Fold Caravan Park.

 St. Georges Day Free-Stay

Any touring guests wishing to visit this St. Georges Day, April 23rd, can stay the night free-of-charge. All we ask is that you are able to answer a simple question:

Which of the parks inhabitants shares its name with the creature slain by St. George?

Badgers                Red Squirrels               Dragonflies

On top of this unusual opportunity to stay at Skelwith Fold free-of-charge, anyone extending their stay into the weekend will also receive a pair of tickets to enjoy our Barbequed Beef of Old England event on the Saturday.

Space will be limited so don't hesitate to book on 015394 32277

Recycling, March 2009

Following a few difficulties with our recycling bin provision we now have a full set of appropriate bins again. As usual they can be found at the recycling area on our main drive where we cater for the disposal of your paper, cardboard, plastic, cans and glass. Battery disposal is found to the side of reception.

Recycling, February 2009

Recycling is a good, ethical, green thing to do. Unfortunately it is no longer a profitable thing to do and this is why the local council have taken away our paper and glass recycling bins. We are talking to third parties about replacement bins, funnily enough with the exact same bins. Although there is a large increase in the cost we think the planet is worth it! These should be in place before 1st March.

Acorns, February 2009

We would be interested to know about the progress of the Acorns that were sent out with the Calendar at Christmas. Where have they been planted, and is there a story to tell, we would love to know.

Digital Television, February 2009

The digital switchover has been mentioned before but it’s worth mentioning again as we still receive a lot of questions on the matter and the switchover date is fast approaching. The current line from digitaluk.co.uk is that on 24th June 2009, BBC2 analogue is switched off and on 22nd July 2009, all remaining analogue channels are switched off. If you wish to continue watching television after those dates you will need to make some provision to do so if you have not done already.

The options are a digital set-top box or Freesat. Most people with old single element aerials will need new digital aerials as well. Don’t leave it until June as the installers will be rushed off their feet in the area possibly quoting long delays for replacing aerials.

Red Squirrel Feeding, December 2008

The feeding programme is proving a real success. Every day we are seeing several Red Squirrels coming to feed. Hopefully by next Spring they will all be “locals” and you will be able to see them once again wandering around the park.

Grizedale Rally, December 2008

On Saturday 29th November 2008 the Coppermines Grizedale Stages Rally used Skelwith as their service area between rally stages. Everyone was on best behaviour so as not to damage so much as a blade of grass or spill a drop of oil on the site and the organisers paid a fee for use of the site, half of which we are donating to the Cumbria Air Ambulance and the other half to Ambleside Mountain Rescue. The arrangement came about once we learnt that the local rally had lost their usual service area and that we might be able to lend a hand while also being able to raise some money for the two needy local organisations.

Water, December 2008

I am sure that you will be as horrified as we were to find out that in the 8½ months the park has been open this year we managed to consume 12 million litres of water and unlike United Utilities we are very happy with the integrity of the pipework on the park! In an attempt to reduce this we have ordered “Hippo’s” for every flushing toilet on the park and we will fit one in your cistern automatically unless you specifically ask us not to. Any toilet with an air-push button won’t need one. If you are wondering what a “Hippo” is, it is a Water Saving Device that fits in the cistern that reduces the amount of water used in each flush, without affecting the way the toilet works. We are also now installing water meters on all new pitches and will be working on a rolling programme to fit them to all pitches over the next 12 months. It is likely that we will be charging for water by meter from 2010 where currently it is incorporated into the pitch fee.

Weather, December 2008

The weather here over the past 2 weeks has been bitterly cold. We still have frozen snow on the ground which refuses to melt away. It must be hanging on for Christmas.

Battery Recycling, October 2008

As promised we are doing as much as we can to recycle, the only recycling we were missing was somewhere for used batteries. We have now put a grey bin to the left of the shop, adjacent to the gas cage and it is clearly marked “battery recycling”. We hope everybody will use this for their spent batteries.

Dogs, October 2008

Dogs are welcome on the park, although we do ask that they are kept on a lead at all times, especially in the woods and the top recreation area. You may have noticed several fawns with their mothers wandering around, we ask you to respect our wildlife by keeping your dogs under control. More importantly we have noticed a large increase in the number of “accidents” that haven’t been cleaned up, in all areas of the park, but especially on the recreation area, unfortunately we find them when mowing. While we are on the subject of dogs it is the owners responsibility to ensure that noisy dogs are not a nuisance to our other guests.

Ecover Environmentally Friendly Products, October 2008

We have recently managed to source environmentally friendly “Ecover” cleaning products to sell in our shop. They are the same brand as are available in the major supermarkets and they range from Toilet Cleaner to Washing-up Liquid and Fabric Softener to Lime Scale Remover. These will be better for our septic tanks and reed beds.

Weather, October 2008

The park opened on March 1st and so did the heavens it seems, despite the weather this summer being awful, we have had one of our better years, as other parks had to close to tourers because they were flooded, we took more than ever because of our hard standing.

Generator, October 2008

Those of you that were on the park on Wednesday the 24th September when United Utilities shut our electricity off all day, for the 6th time this year, probably didn’t notice that within 17 seconds our new standby generator took over the supply of the entire park, automatically. This meant that the entire business could function, the shop stayed open and the water pumps continued to work.

Red Road, October 2008

Several people were wondering why we re-surfaced the red road while we were open. The answer is simple, it could only be done when the weather was good enough, we would have done it earlier but the rain prevented this and it is too cold in winter. Once it has settled down it will have been worth it. There is an added bonus, we have noticed it has slowed down a lot of people who normally drive too fast.

Red Squirrels, June 2008

Red squirrels “Are Back”. We are now getting sightings daily at Top-Glade, Beckmire and by the Slew Tarn. Please ensure all dogs are kept on leads at all times to avoid scaring them away. Please report any sightings of either greys or reds to reception. We will also be gathering in all of the squirrel boxes and green feeders to sterilize and refurbish them and we will relocate them in the appropriate areas to ensure that the reds stay here.

Summer show, June 2008

The summer show last month was a resounding success. Many thanks to all who organised it and all that entered. We were able to select photo’s for next years calendar and are already getting a head start on their publishing so that you’ll all have your complimentary copies in time.

Recycling, June 2008

Recycling is still going really well, we have now had to order another Newspaper bin, the council can’t keep up with you all. You will notice that we are putting a fence around the back of the area to stop anything left on the floor blowing into the woods. Thank you and keep up the good work!!

Motorhome disposal point, June 2008

The motorhome disposal point at the top toilet block is coming along nicely. You will notice behind it we are building a dog/bike/welly wash using recycled rain water running off the adjacent roof. You may have noticed the big green tank and wondered what it was for.

The Big Event ‘08

Our summer show is little more than a month away so it’s time to get painting, snapping, weaving, crafting and baking your entries.  The event is all about displaying the masses of talent there is amongst the guests, owners, friends and even staff of Skelwith Fold Caravan Park.  The idea is to have a bit of fun with competitiveness strictly optional.

You can pick up entry forms at reception and begin handing in your entries in preparation for the big event. The show will be open on Saturday 24th May from 7.00pm until 9.00pm and Sunday 25th May from 10.00am until 1.00pm.

We remind you that we will not accept repeat entries from 2007.  This is purely to keep the show fresh and to prevent exceptional pieces dominating any of the categories year after year.

Tasting Evening, Saturday 17th May.

Why not come and join us for another tasting evening where you can sample the latest from some of our local suppliers.  On offer will be sausages from Pinks (winner of Britains Best Banger), Cheese from The Cheese Larder, as well as beers from both Coniston and Hawkshead breweries.

A raffle is also to be held with prizes donated by Pinks.  All proceeds and contributions, as is now usual, will go to Cumbria Air Ambulance.

The tasting is on Saturday 17th May between 6pm and 8pm.

New Laundrette UPDATE!

You will be pleased to see work starting on the laundrette in the middle Tarn area very soon.  There has been a bit of a delay on the building, the main reason for this is we doubled the size and decided to go for a better building.  The new building will still have the laundrette in but we have had such a good response to the book amnesty that we are making the library/information/internet room bigger.  Thank you to everyone for the books, I think you will be impressed when the building is finished.

Congratulations are in order.

The response to the re-cycling initiative has been a resounding success.  It’s hard to believe that we filled an 8 yard skip in 2 weeks, it took our supplier by surprise, so much so that they hadn’t made provision for emptying it so soon. They assure me that this has now been sorted. If possible, please flatten plastic  bottles to avoid the skip filling too quickly and being full of air. The cardboard bins are both being filled every week, so I have   ordered another. Several people have asked about re-cycling tins etc. So I have ordered another skip, like the plastic one, for metal/tin cans etc. (we still put aluminium drinks cans in the big plastic re-cycle bins, at the top and bottom of the park).  Although it costs to get these bins emptied, it is covered by the reduction in our normal green bin empties, hopefully soon we may be able to drop to only 1 empty per week.

Between us we are trying our best to reduce our “carbon footprint” and it is apparent what a difference we can all make with not too much effort, last year all this would have gone straight to landfill.

Thank you all and well done.  Keep it up!!

Important: Condition of Gas hoses and regulators

Due to current regulations we can not reconnect gas bottles to hoses that are out of date or cracking, It is the owners responsibility to check these and make sure they are in order.

Gas hoses and pigtails (the black hoses that connect gas bottles to auto changeover valves) Should have no signs of cracking and be within 5 years of manufacture.  Each hose has the date stamped on it (not the 1991 approval date) it normally says something like “Nov 2005”.  The larger orange pipe that connects the changeover to the van, also date stamped should be changed every 5 years.

Some older vans have a regulator fitted, they should also be changed every 5 years, these have a date also stamped on them, mostly stamped into the flat face of the nut that screws into the bottle (some are underneath and some are on the top surface).

You don’t need to be corgi registered to change the pigtails, a regulator or a black gas hose with jubilee clips, but you do to change the large orange pipe from the changeover to the van.  Because we are corgi registered, If you do ask us to change them all, please be aware that we will then have to gas safety check  the van and all appliances, which will obviously incur a cost. Alternatively you can contact any of our outside contractors who will be glad to help.

Gas hoses, pigtails and regulators are readily available at any caravan or calor gas dealer, we try to keep a supply of them in our shop too.

Laundry Improved, Library Opening, March 2008

2008 will see the arrival of our central Laundry block situated next to tarn toilet block.  This should spell the end to setting off to use the laundry facilities only to find they’re in use and you’ve had a wasted trip. The number of machines will increase with some larger washers and dryers which will be able to cope with duvets.

The new laundry block will also house a space set aside for a source of local information, leaflets and such, in addition to that available at reception.  This space will be known as the Information Centre and will also accommodate a Trust Library where all are welcome to swap, swap and swap again your read books for something different.  We stress that this will be a Trust Library and you will all be free to browse and swap until your hearts content. In theory, between  yourselves and our tourer guests, the choice of books should be ever changing. If you have any spare or read books please do hand them in to help us get the library off to a well stocked beginning.

Guided Walks From Skelwith, February 2008

More than likely many of you have already tried at least one of the 13 guided walks from Skelwith Fold which we sell in the shop to raise funds for the Wildlife Fund.  In 2007 we have raised a total of £110 from these walks alone.  Tony Carroll, the creator of the walks, is braving wind, rain, sleet and all the other charms of the Lake District winter to check and update all of the walks and we will continue to offer them for £1 each in the site shop, this year giving all proceeds to the Cumbria Air Ambulance.  You will find a catalogue of the walks on the shop counter to peruse, each marked with approximate time, distance and difficulty.

Recycled Wood Popping Up, January 2008

A small update on the clearing up of the fallen trees and the converting of their wood to useful timber.  The clean up in the woods has obviously slowed down now but is likely to continue, albeit on a smaller scale, for some time, such was the devastation of the storm in January 2005.  Alex and Dave of APT Countryside Management have been continuing the lonely task of the clean up and have again been exercising green carpentry to create more bird boxes, path edging, benches and tables throughout the park.

See You Next Year, December 2007

Wishing all of our customers, guests, suppliers and friends a very special Christmas and a Happy New-Year. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2008.

Batty BBQ, July 2007

We will be holding another one of our popular Batty BBQ's on Saturday 28th July for which tickets are still available.  The barbecue starts at 8:00pm and we'd be delighted if you will come and enjoy the night with us.  The barbeque is followed by a guided bat walk (bat detectors are provided) and all proceeds from the event go to conservation tasks upon our woodland park.
Can't make this weekend?  Don't worry.  There will be a second Batty BBQ on Saturday 25th August also beginning at 8:00pm.  We look forward to seeing you there.

30th June 2007

Congratulations to Mr Gibson for winning a free nights stay at Skelwith Fold Caravan Park for use whenever he wishes.  The free night was awarded again for simply letting us know which pitch he selected on the park.  Many thanks to all those who have been returning their entry slips.

31st May 2007

Congratulations to Mr Pearson for having won a free nights stay at Skelwith Fold Caravan Park for whenever he wishes to next return.  Every guest of our touring pitches has the chance to win a free nights stay simply by reporting which pitch they have chosen to pitch on.  Don't forget to let us know when you're next here or you may miss out.

Enjoy England Award Scooped, April 2007

Skelwith Fold Caravan Park has been declared overall winner in the holiday park section of the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence, announced at a ceremony in London last night.
We are one of only 12 'Gold' award winners covering all types of holiday accommodation and attractions in England.  In order to take the Excellence award, for which some 3000 holiday parks were eligible, Skelwith Fold was subjected to a strict judging process which involved detailed inspections from VisitBritain tourism experts, and the scoring of its standard of facilities and services as well as being assessed for aspects such as its atmosphere, quality of upkeep, helpfulness of staff, and contribution to "green tourism".
Judges commented that “Skelwith Fold was a clear winner through its deep commitment to the environment, and that the Wild’s were wholly committed to the green agenda, and demonstrated the same dedication to encouraging staff development and providing first-class customer service”.
Thank you to all our guests for respecting rules and common sense green code which helps us to keep the site looking tidy in an “as-nature-left-it” sort of a way.  Commiserations to our fellow Cumbrian businesses that didn’t quite make it to victory in their respective categories.

Sun, Rhododendrons and Toilets - All Good, April 2007

Easter was as busy for us as ever but was made so much easier by continued hot weather.  Smiling faces all around then, especially as we achieved our goal after a concerted effort of opening our newly refurbished main toilet block in time for the Easter holiday makers.  Feedback on the finish of the block has all been positive and we thank all of our Easter guests for their smiling faces.  With the sun beaming and the Rhododendrons blooming at Skelwith Fold it’s hard not to smile.

Well, We Have Daffodils, April 2007

March the 1st has come and gone and with it comes the start of another season.  Slightly unexpected is the early arrival of some very sunny spring weather interrupted only very briefly by a mini snowfall in March and the odd-April shower.  Thankfully (or regrettably depending on your personal preference) the snowfall was short-lived and settled for just half a day or so, failing to mimic the snow fall of March 2006.  Forecasts of further heavy snow didn’t prove true and we’re now enjoying beautiful bright sunshine and a site covered in (real) daffodils much earlier than expected.  What a wonderful place to see the vibrant changeable colourings of spring.  We look forward to the seeing the bluebells shortly.

Fingers Crossed, February 2007

As we reported back in December we have been automatically entered into the England for Excellence Tourism Awards following our win at both the Cumbria for Excellence Awards and North West Tourism Awards in the category of Best Holiday Park.  We have just received news that of the nine parks up for the National prize we have been short-listed to the final three and have been invited to the awards ceremony to be held in London in April.  While we will be crossing our fingers for an outright victory it is hard not to be flattered enough that we have been recognised as being amongst the top 3 Holiday Parks in the whole of England.  We await with much anticipation the result of April’s awards ceremony.

Summer Show, December 2006

Next season, during the Whitsun holiday, we intend to hold an “Arts & Crafts” show.  Similar shows held in previous seasons were always very well supported and we do have a lot of very talented painters, sculptors, needle workers and photographers (professional and amateurs) on the park and, also, who visit each year as tourers.  So, we thought that we would give you all plenty of notice, so you can start thinking and get busy over the winter to produce more top quality exhibits.  We intend to put on refreshments and hopefully arrange for some local artists to exhibit their work to add interest and also join the judging panel.
There will be certificates and prizes in each category and in the photography section we will also be looking for the best 12 pictures taken within the park of nature or wildlife for our 2008 calendar.
In order to gauge the interest and set the categories, please collect and complete a “show form”, which will be available from reception at the start of the 2007 season in March, and return it as soon as you are able.

North-West Tourism Award, November 2006

Following our success at the Cumbria for Excellence awards we are pleased to announce that we have now also been presented with the North-West Tourism Award for Best Holiday Park. It was with pride that we were nominated for the award and with much glee that we scooped the award above stiff competition.  We weren’t the only winners from Cumbria and give our congratulations to Bridge End Farm Cottages winning Self-Catering Holiday of the Year, Averil Dawson and Ann Cook at The Beacon who together were awarded for Excellence in Customer Service and Low Wood Hotel who won the Excellence in Business Tourism award.

Coffee & A Biscuit, October 2006

On the weekend of the 14th and 15th of this month we would be pleased if you would join us for an informal get together for coffee and biscuits, between 10:30am and 4:00pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Function Room, in order to become better acquainted with our current team at Skelwith.
We will also be opening up our ‘show’ caravans for you to browse, should you wish, and some knowledgeable person will be around if you have any questions.
If you have any spare time during the weekend, please come along and meet us all when we will be delighted to chat over a cup of coffee and light refreshment.

Storm Recycling, September 2006

Storm damage update:  You may have spotted Alex and helper hard at work on the Coppice touring area converting all the fallen oaks into useful wood product.  Much has been converted into oak beams for the building trade as well as flower troughs and bird boxes. Currently, benches for around the park are being made and all waste wood is being converted to chip wood.  See the benches taking shape in the gallery.  All profit from sales of this stock is being put into replanting, with particular attention being given to special wildlife habitats as well as the planting of wild flower in the margins of the park as befits our conservation policy.

Wardens Welcome, September 2006

A warm welcome to Mike and Jeanette Bullock, our new Wardens, who begin here this month and have now moved into the Chalet on the East side of the Reception Office with their daughters, Hannah and Emma, and their dog “Woody”.

Siting Team on Video, 1st September 2006

A film debuts at the Lawns Caravan Show this week made by CITO designed to aid training for the caravan industry on safely siting static caravans.  Much of this film is set on Skelwith Fold Caravan Park and features our own team siting a caravan on the Fir Trees area of the park.  The film has been made to highlight the extra precaution and planning necessary when siting on a woodland park such as Skelwith Fold.

Batty BBQ, 28th August 2006

Our “Batty Barbecue” this weekend, held to raise funds for the wildlife fund, was a great success.  More than 50 people were in attendance to enjoy the barbecue and many waited for night to fall to join the ‘bat walk’ armed with our electronic ‘bat detectors’ and led by one of our knowledgeable volunteers.  The evening was a big hit with the kids too and all were pleased to see and hear lots of bats.  Thanks go to our bats for their participation.

Art At Skelwith Fold, June 2006

A sculpture has been installed in the meadow here at Skelwith Fold for all visitors to see.  It is a unique piece sculpted by local artist Katie Eveson.
Katie: "The Henge" is a monument to the trees that died in the January '05 storms, bringing together themes of ancient monuments and folklore.  These are shown in different elements of the sculpture: the circular layout, circles being the symbol of strength and life, the alignment of the centrepiece North to South and the faces to represent the spirits of these wise old oaks.  I wanted to create a tribute to the trees giving the trees a new purpose and life, providing seats amongst the circle where viewers can sit, look and think.
See photos of the 'henge' in the gallery section.  This piece is currently unnamed, but going by the name of "Skelwith Henge" so all sugestions are greatly appreciated.

Facilities Block Refurbishment, January 2006

Phase 1’ of modernising the top facilities block adjacent to Loughrigg, Garden and Blake Beck has taken place. This means, you’ll find the top block is now better insulated and re-roofed with skylights fitted, meaning brighter and warmer facilities for those using the toilets, showers and washrooms at the top of the park.
